English Lesson 3: Nouns

Nouns – are names of persosn, places, things, animals

  • singular noun – refers to only one noun
  • plural noun – refers to more than one noun

Rules in Pluralization of nouns

1. Add  ‘s’

example:             bag – bags     envelope – envelopes     province – provinces

2. Add ‘es to words ending in s, x, ch and sh

example:             dress – dresses     ranch- ranches     fox – foxes

3. Add ‘ves’ to nouns ending in f or fe

example:             elf  – elves     life – lives

4. For nouns ending in a consonant and ‘y’ – change ‘y’ to ‘i’ and as ‘es’.

example:             country – countries     baby – babies

5. For nouns ending in a vowel and ‘y’- simply add ‘s’

example:             ray – rays     holiday – holidays

6. Some nouns have irregular pluralization –  the spelling of the plural form is different from the singular form

example:             child – children     mouse – mice
